Whereas, The 65th General Convention of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America supported and commended "the historic step of the Episcopal Church of Liberia in becoming an Associate Member of the Province of West Africa"; and Whereas, The 66th General Convention of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America in Denver, Colorado, approved the Covenant Plan which had been elaborated "in a spirit of true understanding and friendship" by Representatives of PECUSA and Representatives of ECL in which the Episcopal Church of Liberia in operative paragraph one confirmed "its intention to become a full member of CPWA" in keeping with its commitment to make a final decision not later than five years after the date on which Associate Membership began; and Whereas, The Bishop of Liberia has been authorized to seek the approval of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America for the Diocese of Liberia to obtain full membership in CPWA any time in 1982 provided the Diocese has complied with the procedure outlined by the Joint Review Committee which met in June, 1981; therefore be it Resolved, That the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church of the United States, pursuant to its duty to carry out the program and policies adopted by the General Convention, give its assent to the Episcopal Church of Liberia becoming a Member of the Church of the Province of West Africa any time in 1982; and be it further Resolved, That the Covenant Plan approved by the 56th Diocesan Convention of the Episcopal Church of Liberia and the 66th General Convention of the Episcopal Church of the United States become fully operative from the date the Diocese of Liberia becomes a Member of the Church of the Province of West Africa. |
