Resolves of the Executive Council

Resolved, That this Executive Council commend the Presiding Bishop for his sending a special team to make a pastoral visit to the Bishop and Diocese of Jerusalem during the current unrest in East Jerusalem, Gaza and the Occupied West Bank, and send its prayers and greetings to the Rt. Rev. Samir Kafity and our sisters and brothers in the Diocese of Jerusalem, and support them in their ministry of witness and reconciliation; and urge all Episcopalians to support the humanitarian outreach of the diocese during the current crisis by supporting the special Jerusalem Appeal of the Presiding Bishop's Fund; and be it further

Resolved, That this Council support all non-violent efforts to insure the self-determination of the Palestinian People; and uphold the security of the State of Israel; and commend international efforts to secure justice and peace in the land held to be Holy by Jews, Christians and Moslems alike; and be it further

Resolved, That this Council express its deep concern about the violation of human rights in East Jerusalem, Gaza and the Occupied West Bank through such practices as administrative detention; and strongly oppose the arrest and detention of the staff of the human rights organization AL-HAQ, especially:

and call on the President of the United States and the Secretary of State to protest the practice of administrative detention, especially the four human rights field workers named above; and be it further

Resolved, That this Council endorse the Message of Concern on the current situation in the Israeli-Occupied Territories of the West Bank and Gaza adopted by the Executive Committee of the National Council of Churches at its February 19, 1988 meeting.
