One Way to Meet a Need

Droughts, floods, hunger and disease are early lessons for Korea's 2 ½ million slum occupants and for the mind of a child there is no reason for such suffering.
Born after the Korean War, many of these children cannot see that bombed cities and burned forests mean refugees and floods for years to come.
Our generous gifts of food and clothing mean the difference between life or disease for many. Not only in Korea, but in thirty countries in Asia, Europe and the Middle East, Africa and Latin America the need is great.
Wandering on a mountainside in Korea is a boy who desperately needs a new shirt. Halfway around the world is an Episcopal housewife doing her spring cleaning. The possibility is there for the shirt which she finds Johnny has outgrown to find its way to Stephen Kang in Korea.
In most parishes of the Episcopal Church, and certainly in every diocese, there is a supply chairman of the Episcopal Churchwomen, part of whose job it is to be familiar with the United Clothing Appeal. The United Clothing Appeal is a part of Church World Service which meets the need for clothing and bedding in underprivileged areas on an interdenominational basis all over the world. The Episcopal Church participates in Church World Service through the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief.
Use the collection box in your local parish, or in a nearby church. Local councils of churches are charged with the responsibility of collecting used clothing and arranging for it to be transported to one of Church World Service's nine clothing centers distributed throughout the United States. The one nearest you is (see back page for list). Here clothing is inspected, sorted, baled and packed for shipment.
It is important that donors send fifteen cents per pound to cover the costs of processing the materials at the Church World Service Clothing Centers and to get the clothes from the centers to the ports.
In Korea alone, over 5, 000 blankets have been requested for 1964. Blankets are the most useful single article.
In June of 1963 Typhoon Shirley struck southwest Korea creating widespread havoc. Korean Church World Service made available 1600 bales of clothing and 1.7 million pounds of food to the disaster victims in coordination with relief given by other voluntary and government agencies in the area.
In the overall program of the United Clothing Appeal, four categories of articles are requested:
1) Clothing in good condition and ready to wear, pressing unnecessary. Most urgently needed: men's and boys' clothing--especially suits, trousers, and work clothing; light weight clothing for persons in warm climates; infants and children's clothing - women's garments. In addition: suits, caps, gloves, mittens, sweaters, robes, mufflers, underwear, stockings, cloth remnants for sewing.
2) Bedding in good condition. Twenty-three countries have requested almost 60,000 pounds of blankets for 1964.
3) Shoes - Men's shoes, especially work shoes.
4) Miscellaneous - Yard goods and yarn, soap, sewing kits, health aid kits, medical kits (do not send sample or prescription drugs).
Certain items are specifically not requested:
Clothing or bedding requiring cleaning, laundering or repair;
Evening clothes, high heeled or open-toed shoes, hats, extra belts, pocketbooks, ties, bathing suits, bulky bedding such as mattresses or pillows.
