Bishop Cole Dies

NEW YORK --- Funeral services for the Rt. Rev. C. Alfred Cole, D.D., Episcopal Bishop of Upper South Carolina, were held Saturday, April 13, at Trinity Church, Columbia, S. C.

Officiating were the Rt. Rev. Gray Temple, Bishop of South Carolina, the Rt. Rev. Albert Sidney Thomas, Retired Bishop of South Carolina, the Rev. C. Capers Satterlee, rector of the Church of the Advent, Spartanburg, S. C., the Rev. James Stirling, rector of Trinity Church, and the Ven. John A. Pinckney, Archdeacon of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina.

Interment was in Trinity Churchyard.

Bishop Cole, 54, died Thursday, April 11, at Providence Hospital in Columbia, where he had been a patient since March 21 when - he suffered a second heart attack. The first attack occurred on February 18. He was then hospitalized for more than two weeks.

Following Bishop Cole's funeral on Saturday, the diocesan standing committee met and set an election for Bishop Cole's successor at the forthcoming diocesan convention on May 7 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Columbia.

Bishop Cole had headed the Diocese of Upper South Carolina since 1953.

He is survived by his wife; six children ranging from eight to nineteen years of age; and his mother, Mrs. Alfred Cole, Sr., of Washington, D.C.
