Bishop Onell A. Soto of Venezuela has accepted the post of assistant bishop of Atlanta. "I come with a real sense of commitment to mission and ministry," he said. "I want to share with the people of the Diocese of Atlanta all that I am: my faith, my international experience, my missionary zeal, my love and friendship." He graduated from the University of the South's School of Theology in 1964. He served for 10 years in the world mission department of the Episcopal Church Center in New York. He has been Bishop of Venezuela since 1987. He will begin work as assistant bishop on May 1, pending approval of this appointment by the House of Bishops.
Dr. Wayne Floyd, Jr. was recently appointed the canon theologian at the Cathedral Church of St. Stephen in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Floyd is the first canon in the history of the Cathedral and in the diocese of Central Pennsylvania. He is the director of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Center and visiting professor of theology at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. "As canon theologian, Dr. Floyd will be a wonderful resource to the cathedral and diocese," said the Very Rev. Malcolm McDowell, Jr., dean of the cathedral. "This position will give him the opportunity to use his gifts within the worshiping community by leading courses in Anglican theology and advising various committees at the cathedral and throughout the diocese."
The Rev. John Gerald Barton Andrew, rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manhattan, will be admitted as an honorary canon of the Diocese of New York by Bishop Richard Grein of New York. He will be the first honorary canon to be named by Grein during his term as bishop of New York. "John's 22 years as rector of Saint Thomas is an inspiration to us all," Grein said. "Not only has he built a large, diverse and loyal parish, but he has reached out to the busy professionals who work along Fifth Avenue and to the homeless and hungry on the streets. And to top it all off, he is a well-informed and intelligent preacher. It is an honor for me to admit him as a canon of the diocese."
The Rev. Canon Clarence W. Hayes was recently elected bishop of Panama. He was ordained a priest in 1952 and took a masters of divinity degree at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 1967. He is director of the Episcopal Institute in San Cristobal, Panama, and a professor at the University of Panama. He is an honorary canon of the Cathedral of Saint Luke in Balboa, Panama.
Nancy Marvel was recently appointed interim director of the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief. She had been director of grants for the fund.
