The Rev. Edward Stone Gleason will be the next editor and director of Forward Movement Publications. He is director of development, alumni/ae and public relations at the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria. Bishop Edward Jones of Indianapolis, chairman of Forward Movement's executive committee, said that "Ted Gleason brings to Forward Movement the same kind of spiritual vision and energy that have helped to make Forward Movement a good servant of the church and of its God throughout Forward's 60 years." Gleason will succeed the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Long who retires at the end of 1994.
Bishop David E. Johnson of Massachusetts will resign as diocesan bishop on June 5, 1995. He will be succeeded immediately by Bishop Coadjutor Thomas Shaw, who was elected bishop in March and consecrated on September 24. The David E. Johnson Fund for Children and Families has been established to honor him for his leadership in the diocese and to continue his commitment to children's advocacy.
The Rev. Alice Downs, director of alumni/ae and church relations at General Theological Seminary (GTS), will become executive director of the New Jersey National Council of Churches in January. A 1987 GTS graduate, she was a hospital chaplain before joining GTS staff in 1991. Bishop Craig Anderson, president and dean of GTS, said, "We will miss her great abilities and wonderful presence but rejoice with her in the great opportunities presented by this new ministry."
William S. Craddock, Jr., director of the Clergy Leadership Project, will become the new director of the Cornerstone Project beginning January 1. He will replace the Rev. James C. Fenhagen, who will retire on December 31, 1994 (see the Newsmaker interview in this issue). The Cornerstone Project, sponsored by the Episcopal Church Foundation, works to build a stronger network of support for Episcopal clergy and congregations. Craddock will divide his time between Cornerstone and the Clergy Leadership Project.
The Rev. John L. Said, rector of St. Kevin's Church in Opa-Locka, Florida, was recently elected the Diocese of Southeast Florida's first suffragan bishop at a special convention held at Trinity Cathedral in Miami. "I'm absolutely stunned. I didn't think this was really going to happen," Said said. Bishop Calvin O. Schofield of Southeast Florida said, "I consider John Said a friend and a very capable person with tremendous background and experience in the church." Before becoming rector at St. Kevin's in 1984, Said served churches in Indiana and as a missionary in Brazil.
ChaplainWilliam C. Noble was appointed executive assistant for the Office of the Bishop of the Armed Forces by Presiding Bishop Edmond Browning. He has parish experience in both military and civilian settings. He is a graduate of the University of the South and General Theological Seminary and is currently on the faculty of the U.S. Army Chaplain School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He will be replacing the Rev. David Bena on January 1, 1995.
