Church Leaders Express Sadness for Bombing of Iraq

Presiding Bishop Edmond L. Browning joined other church leaders in a January 14 statement that expressed sadness for the bombing of Iraq by allied forces led by the United States. "The resort to violence represents a failure -- a failure of international processes of conciliation...and most importantly a human failure." The statement asked, "Is it not time for the international community to devote its resources to the means of conflict resolution rather than the accumulation of weapons of destruction?" The statement expressed special concern for "the most vulnerable," the civilians who are "least able to defend themselves," and the church leaders pledged themselves to "the search for a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East."
