The Rt. Rev. Charles Francis "Tod" Hall, retired bishop of the Diocese of New Hampshire, died on May 17 at the age of 84. He retired as diocesan bishop in 1973, having served in that capacity for a quarter century after succeeding Bishop John Dallas at the age of 39. When seminarian Jonathan Daniels, a member of St. James Church in Keene, New Hampshire, was shot to death during voter-registration efforts in Selma, Alabama, in 1965, Hall immediately traveled to Alabama and delivered a stirring human-rights sermon in a local chapel. Hall earned his bachelor of divinity degree from the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts (now the Episcopal Divinity School). After retirement, he made his home in Kittery Point, along the coast of Maine.

The Rt. Rev. David B. Reed has announced his intention to retire as bishop of Kentucky. Reed, 65, the senior diocesan bishop in the Episcopal Church, is expected to retire no later than April 25, 1994, the 30th anniversary of his consecration as a bishop. Reed last year withdrew his membership in the all-white Louisville Country Club following intense criticism, and he narrowly survived a "no-confidence" vote at his diocesan convention on February 29. In a newspaper account, Reed said that the vote was a factor in his decision. A search for his successor is expected to begin in September. The mandatory retirement age of Episcopal Church bishops is 72.

Pamela Chinnis, president of the Episcopal Church's House of Deputies, recently received honorary degrees from two Episcopal seminaries. During commencement ceremonies in New York City on May 20, The General Theological Seminary honored Chinnis with a doctor of divinity degree, citing her "life of service to the church and concern for the ministry of women in the church." Two days later, the Church Divinity School of the Pacific honored Chinnis with a doctor of humane letters degree on the seminary's campus in Berkeley, California.
