Advocacy Conference Scheduled for May

The Bishop Lyman Ogilby National Episcopal Advocacy Conference will be held in Arlington, Virginia, May 19-22. The conference will allow Episcopalians to renew their own public witness as well as express the church's concerns through exploring domestic and foreign policy issues. Presiding Bishop Edmond Browning will address the conference, and Kirk O'Donnell, former counsel to House Speaker "Tip" O'Neill, will present the keynote address. A number of issues will be spotlighted, with Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) speaking on the the Civil Rights bill of 1991, Senator Albert Gore (D-TN) discussing environmental legislation, and Harold Saunders -- assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs in the Carter administration -- joining the Middle East panel. Grassroots organizing and advocacy planning for the General Convention will also be part of the conference's agenda. The registration fee is $50.
