Conference Will Examine Challenges of Single Life
Episcopal News Service. November 29, 1990 [90317C]
"Solo Flight: Living into a New Paradigm for Singles in a New Century," a five-day conference beginning February 10 at the Kanuga Conference Center in North Carolina, will focus on the challenges facing single persons from postcollege to postretirement ages. The conference will seek to define more fully the single state as a normal option within both the church and society, with its own diversity and unique needs, rather than as a temporary or victimized situation. The gathering will examine the perceptions and realities of single life; the dependencies and addictions sometimes engendered by loneliness; self-awareness and self-care; sexuality; and the experience of wholeness. The staff will be composed primarily of single Episcopalians with specialized training in personal growth. Although conference registration is on an individual basis, diocesan bishops of Province IV have been invited to sponsor a widowed person, a divorced person, and a person who has never married. Professionals interested in intergenerational singles' ministry are also welcomed. Kay Collier-Slone, chair of the Task Force on Singles' Ministries, will coordinate the conference, aided by a grant from Kanuga. The cost of attending Solo Flight is $495 per person, and a limited number of partial scholarships are available. For registration and inquiries, contact Life Force Enterprises' Solo Flight, P.O. Box 24041, Lexington, KY 40524; telephone 606-252-6527 (daytime) or 606-278-7962 (evenings).
