Episcopal Church Center Has Bomb Threats on Two Consecutive Days

On both April 4 and 5, the Episcopal Church Center in New York received telephone bomb threats, and the building was emptied. In referring to the first such threats in the building's history, Treasurer Ellen Cooke met with staff to discuss the "intrusion into our life and violation of a sense of well-being." On the advice of police, she announced new internal security procedures, including restricted hours for access to the building. Presiding Bishop Edmond Browning told an Arizona newspaper that the threat might be related to Middle East concerns. He also mentioned that the Church Center had received a postcard threatening "prominent Episcopalians." That threat has been turned over to the police and the Secret Service since President and Mrs. Bush are Episcopalians.
