The Rev. Edward L. Salmon, 55, rector of the Church of St. Michael and St. George in St. Louis, was elected September 7 the 13th bishop of the diocese of South Carolina on the first ballot.
Salmon will succeed Bishop C. FitzSimons Allison who is resigning in order to give full-time to teaching, preaching and writing.
The bishop-elect is a native of Mississippi, a graduate of Sewanee and Virginia Seminary, and served parishes in Arkansas before accepting a call to St. Louis. Under his leadership, the Church of St. Michael and St. George has grown dramatically and now has a staff of four full-time priests and a lay staff of 26. In a prepared statement at the time of his nomination, Salmon said, "My task is to focus the vision of ministry for the parish and, at the same time, respect and encourage the gift of others. Collaboration is the style which marks my leadership. It requires respect for others and their ideas while holding them accountable for their ministry."
Salmon teaches daily Bible study and hosts a weekly radio broadcast. He is president of the Episcopal-Presbyterian Foundation and the board of trustees of the Anglican Institute, and chairman of the board of SPEAK, the Anglican Digest. He has been a trustee of the University of the South for 18 years.
