Episcopal News Service. June 23, 1988 [88140]
LEWISBURG, Pa. (DPS, June 23) -- The Diocese of Central Pennsylvania will embark on a $1.7 million capital/endowment campaign beginning in the fall of 1988 as a result of actions taken during the 118th annual Diocesan Convention held June 10 and 11 at Bucknell University, Lewisburg.
Some 300 delegates representing the 75 churches and missions of the diocese voted to approve the nine-month campaign following more than a year of planning and the completion of a feasibility study.
The funds raised will provide an endowment with interest to be used to support world mission, diocesan outreach programs, and special ministries.
A large portion of the campaign funds will be used to establish new Episcopal congregations and to support the ministry of existing parishes. Funds will also be used for world mission, special ministries to youth and the elderly, and leadership development.
Bishop Charles F. McNutt, Jr., explained the goals of the campaign in detail during his annual convention address. Concluding his remarks he said, "I believe that the marshaling of financial resources and placing them in an endowment which can support the mission of the Church not only for the next few years, but for many decades into the twenty-first century, can be one of the most significant and longlasting benefits we can bring to the Church today."
The Diocese of Central Pennsylvania encompasses 24 counties and includes some 20,000 parishioners.
