Episcopal Publications Win Church Press Kudos

SAN FRANCISCO (DPS, May 29) -- The Communicant, monthly newspaper of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, swept the annual competition of the Associated Church Press this year, taking a general excellence award and five merit awards. The awards were announced at the organization's annual convention here.
The general excellence award in the newspaper category cited it as "a solid, yet surprisingly clever diocesan newspaper which presents regional, national, and international issues with liveliness and balance.
New World Outlook, monthly missions magazine of the United Methodist Church, won a general excellence award for a denominational magazine. It was cited as "a magazine which devotes each issue to one topic, e.g., the environment, feminism and ethnic traditions, and explores it in depth and penetratingly, but avoids simplistic answers."
Cathedral Age, published quarterly by the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation in Washington, also won a general excellence award for a denominational magazine. The citation said, "While graphically employing a traditional approach that is contemporary in spirit, the magazine combines subjects of national interest within the local perspective of the National Cathedral."
Christian History, published quarterly by the Christian History Institute, won the general excellence award for best special interest magazine. It was cited as "an elegant, informative, unusual publication with thorough, scholarly, and highly readable presentations of a broad range of persons, groups and events in the history of Christianity."
Interchange, published quarterly by the Lutheran Council in the USA, won the general excellence award in the newsletter category. It was described as "an informative, effective and credible newsletter which successfully combines the written word with a superb graphic grid that is organized, yet flexible."
The Church Woman, published quarterly by Church Women United, won the general excellence award for publications with circulations of 10,000 or less. The citation said that "the simple and dignified cover approach makes this a publication which reflects quality and quiet intelligence."
The awards given this year include:
- Theological reflection by a publication under 10,000 circulation -- The Witness, published monthly by the Episcopal Church Publishing Co., for "Meditation for a Nuclear Age," by Paul Moore, Jr.
- News story by a publication under 10,000 circulation -- The Witness, for "Witness Author Loses N.C. Parish," by Mary Lou Suhor.
- Newspaper graphics for an entire issue -- The Communicant, editor John B. Justice.
- Humor -- The Communicant, for "Confessions of a Preacher's Kid," by Allison Craig.
- Newspaper photography -- The Communicant, for pictures taken by Wilson Carter.
- Magazine photography in an entire issue -- Cathedral Age, photographer Morton Broffman.
- Feature article in a magazine of 10,000 circulation or less -- Living Message, published monthly by the Anglican Church of Canada, for "Encountering God in the Poor of Latin America," by Hazel Jack.
- Newspaper feature article -- The Communicant, for "The Birth of Mirth," by Michael McFee.
- In-depth reporting of a current issue by a publication with circulation on 10,000 or less -- The Witness, for "AIDS: The Plague that Lays Waste at Noon."
