NEW YORK (DPS, Feb. 27) -- Presiding Bishop Edmond Lee Browning has appointed the Rev. Dr. Barbara M. Taylor, a vocational deacon now serving in the Diocese of Nevada, as Coordinator for Ministries with Children in the Education for Mission and Ministry unit at the Episcopal Church Center.

Taylor, who will take up her position March 24, has an Ed.D. from Brigham Young University in educational administration and a M.A. in history from the University of Nevada, Reno. She did her theological training through the Diocese of Nevada and was ordained deacon in 1981 by Bishop Wesley Frensdorff.

A native of the San Francisco Bay area, Taylor has lived in Nevada for 20 years. She has experience in teaching both adults and youth and has trained other teachers in the areas of affective education and substance abuse and suicide prevention. She has 15 years of experience in curriculum development, implementation and evaluation at the university and public school levels.

At the diocesan level, Taylor served as advisor to the youth commission, planning and directing youth retreats. A former director of Christian education on the parish and diocesan levels, she has been a member of the Christian Education Committee of the Diocese of Nevada for the past four years. During that time, she has worked on the development of curricula for youth camps and support systems for church school teachers. She was coordinator of Social Action Program for Youth and served as resource person for Sunday School teachers and Camp Galilee.

Taylor was also a member of the Provincial Council for Youth Ministry, which covers the Dioceses of Nevada, Northern California, Utah and Navajoland.

In speaking about her appointment, Taylor said, "I am looking forward to meeting people throughout the Church. As part of the diaconate, I see myself as an enabler. There's a lot to learn, and I plan on learning a lot from the people out there."

Taylor has two children and a granddaughter.
