Hopkins Consecrated Bishop of North Dakota

Episcopal News Service. February 28, 1980 [80062]

FARGO, N. D. -- Harold Anthony Hopkins, Jr., was consecrated Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Dakota here on Feb. 18, with the Rt. Rev. John M. Allin, Presiding Bishop, as the chief consecrator.

Co-consecrators of the 49-year-old former Archdeacon of the Diocese of Maine were Bishop George T. Masuda, who retired as Bishop of North Dakota last Dec. 31, and Bishop Frederick B. Wolf of Maine.

The preacher at the service was Dr. Charity Waymouth of Bar Harbor, Maine.

The presenting clergy included the Rev. Harold A. Hopkins, Sr., of Shrewsbury, Mass. The trip of Father Hopkins -- who retired in 1968 -- and Mrs. Hopkins to the consecration of their son to the episcopacy was made possible by contributions from friends in Episcopal and Roman Catholic congregations in Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania and Maine.

Gifts to the new bishop were presented by friends in Maine and North Dakota, including the Native American people of North Dakota.

There was a strong ecumenical tone to the consecration service. The service itself was held in the First Lutheran Church of Fargo and there were participants and representatives from the Roman Catholic, Methodist and Lutheran churches as well as the North Dakota Council of Churches.

Among those attending were the local congressman, the mayor of Fargo, and the Hon. Arthur Link, Governor of North Dakota.

Bishop Hopkins was born in Philadelphia in 1930 and received his education at the University of Pennsylvania and General Theological Seminary in New York City. His pastoral experience includes congregations in New York and Maine.

He was assistant to the bishop of Maine from 1969 to 1978, and from 1978 until his consecration he was Archdeacon of Maine. He has also served as Canon Missioner and editor of the diocesan publication in the Diocese of Maine.

Bishop Hopkins and his wife, Nancy, have six children between ages 13 and 22.
