Bishop Chambers to Head Anglicans United
Episcopal News Service. April 20, 1977 [77136]
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Rt. Rev. Albert A. Chambers, retired Bishop of Springfield, is assuming the international presidency of Anglicans United (AU). The change was announced by the Rev. Canon Albert J. duBois who is stepping down to the office of executive director in order to turn over the leadership of AU to a bishop.
Canon duBois described Anglicans United as an independent fellowship of clergy and laity with support in five Provinces of the Anglican Communion. In North America, he said AU has assisted in the formation of three new jurisdictions of Anglicans and Episcopalians determined to continue the Doctrine, Discipline and Worship of the Church as it existed (in the USA) prior to the Minneapolis General Convention.
Parishes from San Diego to British Columbia make up the Western Jurisdiction. Parishes from Minnesota and Wisconsin to Mexico comprise the Central Jurisdiction. More than twenty-three parishes on the East Coast are forming the Atlantic Jurisdiction including, again, Canadian Anglicans. The immediate result in the West and the Central area has been the setting-up of new Mission Congregations at the request of the laity -- six in the West, five in the Mid-West. Bishops are being selected.
