Diocesan Press Service. September 11, 1975 [75307]

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. -- The Rt. Rev. Scott Field Bailey of Houston was elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas at a special convention held here September 3. He has accepted his election subject to the required consents by bishops and standing committees of the dioceses of the church. He expects to take up his new duties January 15, 1976.

Bishop Bailey has been Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Texas since 1964. A native of Houston, he was educated at Rice Institute, the Virginia Theological Seminary, and the University of the South. He has served parishes in several Texas communities, including Waco, Lampasas, Nacogdoches, San Augustine, Houston, and Austin.

Bishop Bailey also serves the church as secretary of the House of Bishops, having been elected in 1967. Since February, 1974, he has been Executive Officer of the General Convention, overseeing the work of the Secretary-Treasurer and the Manager. In addition he represents the presidents of the two Houses of General Convention at meetings of Joint Committees and Commissions, and the boards and agencies established by the Convention. He coordinates the various programs, relates them to the ongoing work of the Executive Council, and helps prepare for the 1976 General Convention in Minnesota.

Bishop Bailey will continue to serve in these two positions.

Bishop Bailey will be associated with West Texas' Bishop Harold C. Gosnell for at least a year before the latter's retirement, at which time he will become diocesan bishop. Suffragan Bishop R. Earl Dicus has announced his intention to retire December 31, 1975.
