Bishop Lewis Preaches at Service for U.S. Navy

Diocesan Press Service. May 10, 1966 [43-6]

The Rt. Rev. Arnold Lewis, Suffragan Bishop for the Armed Forces, made a plea for less criticism of American policy in Vietnam by leaders in the church at a sermon at the Washington Cathedral, April 17.

Bishop Lewis urged support of the government's position in Vietnam which he considers the majority of Americans do. He also, however, recognized the right of dissent.

The service was the annual service for the United States Navy. The lessons were read by the Hon. Charles F. Baird, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and Admiral David L. McDonald, U. S. N., Chief of Naval Operations. Presiding at the service was the Very Rev. Francis B. Sayre, Jr., Dean of the Cathedral. The two choirs of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis were present at the service.
