SAN JOAQUIN: Bishop hospitalized with mild pneumonia, possible gallbladder problem

Bishop John-David Schofield of the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin was hospitalized December 3 for mild pneumonia in one lung and what appears to be a gallbladder problem.

Schofield was still in the hospital on December 5 awaiting the results of tests, according to the Rev. Canon William Gandenberger, Canon to the Ordinary.

"He's in great spirits and laughing," Gandenberger said, adding he visited Schofield earlier in the day. He said the bishop has "occasional jabs of pain" but was otherwise resting comfortably.

Schofield's hospitalization came a day after the diocese's annual convention concluded. He reportedly had to turn over presidency of the convention Eucharist to the head of the diocesan Standing Committee because he was not feeling well.

The Diocese of San Joaquin comprises about 10,000 Episcopalians worshipping in 48 congregations.
