MAINE: Stephen Taylor Lane to be ordained and consecrated as bishop coadjutor on May 3

The Episcopal Diocese of Maine will ordain and consecrate the Rev. Canon Stephen Taylor Lane as its bishop coadjutor on May 3 at the Cathedral of St. Luke in Portland.

Lane, 58, serves as Canon for Deployment and Ministry Development in the Diocese of Rochester, New York. He was ordained in 1978 and holds degrees from the University of Rochester, Colgate-Rochester Crozer and Bexley Hall seminaries.

As bishop coadjutor, Lane will work alongside Maine's current bishop, the Rt. Rev. Chilton R. Knudsen, until her retirement in September 2008. Lane will be installed as diocesan bishop the same month. Knudsen announced her retirement and called for the election of a coadjutor at the annual diocesan convention in October 2005.

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will serve as chief consecrator. Knudsen and other bishops from New England dioceses will also participate in the service.

Jefferts Schori will also meet with clergy members from across Maine on May 2 and will celebrate Eucharist and preach in Spanish at a service of Mision San Lucas and celebrate and preach in English at Christ Episcopal Church in Biddeford on May 4.

The Diocese of Maine consists of 17,000 members worshipping in 67 parishes.
