Korean Theologian Challenges WCC Assembly to "Culture of
Life."
Prof. Chung Hyun Kyung of South Korea stirred strong reation with her keynote address
calling the churches to abandon the culture of death for a culture of life. She invoked the
spirits of the oppressed people of history in a traditional Korean ceremony--and then she
burned the list. Her blending of cultural concepts of spirit with an exposition on the Holy
Spirit drew charges of syncretism from some participants, especially the Orthodox. (World
