Shielded from the African sun by colorful umbrellas, Archbishop Robert
Runcie of Canterbury, center, presides at the service inaugurating the new Anglican Province
of the Church in Burundi, Rwanda and Zaire on May 11 in Bukavu, Zaire. Also taking part,

of Uganda from which the new province separated, and Bishop Philip Ridsdale of the Diocese
of Boga-Zaire. The new province was sanctioned by the 1978 Lambeth Conference of Angli-
can bishops and the 1979 Anglican Consultative Council. The Episcopal Church's 1978-1979
Church School Missionary Offering was designated to help meet needs that arose in the crea-
tion of the new province, which is largely French-speaking. (Photo Credit: Anglican Con-
